Every year, Corruption Watch (CW), the local chapter of the global anti-corruption movement, Transparency International, publishes an annual report to share with their funders and the public how they are making an impact in the fight against corruption in South Africa. Each report provides an update on CW campaigns, advocacy work, and research findings, and shares stories and experiences of ordinary people exposing the corrupt.
The crux of the project lies within the infographic development. Highlighting both the corruption issues our country faces, and the success stories of the non-governmental organisation were key considerations in creating a design that attracts a wide range of audiences, including whistle-blowers, potential funders, activists, partners, and change-makers. Expressing this quantifiable information in a clear and impactful way makes the document both visually engaging for the reader and ensures this content is given prominence.
We were cautious with the statistics structure and used bold colours to draw the reader’s attention immediately. The annual report looks appealing and approachable at first glance. We used high contrast between the text and background for ease of reading. The strategic use of bright orange, yellow, red, blue, black, and white helps readers notice what information is available and important. It makes it easy for them to skim and find topics of personal interest.
We made the text large enough for easy reading and chose Serif fonts that are highly readable for the main text, headings, subheadings, and labels. The primary and secondary fonts contrast well with each other.
We used boldface type to highlight important words and phrases - But sparingly, because large blocks of text in bold are hard to read.
We proudly won the 2021 NYX Awards as the Best Annual Report Design. The NYX is an international awards program that recognises excellence in marketing, communication, print, digital and creativity at large. More than 1,000 marketing, design, print, video, and digital production entries were submitted from over 50 countries worldwide.
Feedback from this Corruption Watch annual report edition has been overwhelmingly positive from the client, their stakeholders, other chapters within the Transparency International network, and the media, and we are grateful and proud to maintain our ongoing partnership with the organisation.
With a strong story, good design, and the right format, we can transform your organisation's data, milestones, and highlights into an engaging piece of content that helps you cultivate stronger connections with your investors, shareholders, or donors.
What do those types of annual reports look like? Well, you came to the right place. Interested? Let's talk!
